Sam Eggington loses his European title and any chance of fighting the likes of Danny Garcia with a points defeat at the hands of Mohamed Mimoune.
Though he took the opening round it was evident Eggington was in for a hard night’s work, as the slick skills of the southpaw challenger were on show.
The Frenchman built an early lead moving and countering, finding a home for the right hook counter time after time. Ever the aggressor the Englishman continued to steam forward and was evidently the stronger man. However the marauding style of the champion only played into Mimoune’s hands, marking him up with well-timed counters.
Eggington looked like he could mount a comeback in the middle rounds as the pressure looked to get to the challenger. However after a short spell of success the champion tired himself, and the tide turned back in favour of Mimoune. ‘The Problem’ lived up to his name bamboozling his opponent for the rest of the fight.
Eggington was urged on desperately before the final round by his corner and though he tried his sluggish approach was unable to deliver the knockout.
Ultimately this was a dominant performance by Mohamed Mimoune as he took the European welterweight title. However one judge did not agree and the Frenchman had to settle for a majority decision win.
