Popular Irish amateur standout Paddy Barnes had his professional dreams destroyed, in his first world title outing.
It was an ambitious aim for the 31 year old flyweight. In only his sixth fight he challenged for the WBC world title, against seasoned pro, Christofer Rosales. It seemed a close match upon viewing with the Irishman boxing well. However it was evident that the 30 fight veteran carried the power, and that would ultimately be the difference. Both men traded body shots in round four and Rosales the stronger fighter slumped Barnes with a body shot. After bracing a combination to the body from the feather fisted Barnes, he unleashed a right uppercut to the diaphragm, which had his opponent clutching his ribs on the canvas.
The bell landed to end the round. However, Barnes could not meet the count to get a much needed break between rounds, and was counted out.
This was a very brave and ambitious challenge by the Irishman. However he will need a lot more seasoning in the professional game, before making his second world title challenge.
